The cue can be almost anything: a time of day, a physical location, an emotional state, a preceding action, or even other people. The routine is the behaviour itself. The reward — whether it's a feeling of relief, pleasure, accomplishment, or reduced stress — is what tells the brain, do this again.

Why Rewards Do Most of the Work
The reward phase of the loop is not just a finishing touch — it's the engine. Pair the new behaviour with something immediately satisfying — a favourite playlist during a workout, a short break after a study block, or simply acknowledging the completion with a checkmark. Small, timely rewards accelerate the brain's encoding of the loop far more effectively than distant goals.
Context and Environment as Invisible Cues
One of the most underappreciated drivers of habitual behaviour is physical and social context. Research in environmental psychology shows that people often perform the same behaviour in the same setting without consciously deciding to — the environment itself acts as the cue.
This is why habits formed in one environment (a specific gym, a home office, a commute) can temporarily weaken when that environment changes.
