Chasing soreness as a marker of success can lead to overtraining and inadequate recovery.

Use DOMS as a Calibration Signal

If you're experiencing DOMS after every single workout, it's often a sign you're progressing too aggressively or not allowing enough recovery time. Aim to introduce new exercises or intensity increases gradually — small steps of around 5–10% per week are a widely cited general guideline for safe progression. Over time, soreness becomes less frequent as your body adapts, which is a sign your training is working.

Evidence-Based Ways to Support Recovery

While no strategy fully eliminates DOMS, several approaches are supported by research as helpful for managing symptoms and supporting recovery:

  • Light movement: Low-intensity activities like walking or gentle yoga can improve blood flow and temporarily reduce soreness perception without adding stress to damaged tissue.
  • Adequate protein: Consuming sufficient dietary protein gives your body the amino acids it needs to repair muscle tissue. General dietary guidelines recommend spreading protein intake across meals rather than concentrating it in one sitting.
  • Sleep: Much of muscle repair happens during sleep, when the body produces growth hormone and undertakes tissue maintenance. Prioritizing consistent, quality sleep is one of the most underrated recovery tools.
  • Cold and heat therapies: Cold application may help reduce inflammation in the acute phase; heat can ease stiffness. Evidence on their overall effectiveness for DOMS is mixed, so consider these comfort measures rather than cures.
  • Gradual progression: Slowly increasing workout intensity over time — a principle known as progressive overload — is the most reliable way to reduce the frequency and severity of DOMS episodes.
